UN bans Fiji troops

By MICHAEL FIELD – Stuff.co.nz

The United Nations has just announced it will no longer hire Fiji troops for its peacekeeping operations, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says.

New Zealand has been pushing for the UN to ban Fijians since Voreqe Bainimarama’s 2006 coup.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation said Rudd made the announcement ahead of talks with Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare.

Rudd says the UN’s move means important remittances to Fijian military families will now be cut off.

“Through our own interventions with the United Nations and supported by New Zealand and other countries, the United Nations is now not going to engage future or new Fijian troops for new operations,” he said.

The Pacific Islands Forum is set to expel Fiji on Friday and the Commonwealth is considering action.

  1. It’s a start, now next step is to work on ending peace keeping missions altogether.

  2. well, well fiji soldiers, now with your papa frank’s doing you have no more jobs in the UN …

it’s time that you stopped following people around blindly …

i hope you all get kicked out of all your villages too for supporting papa frank … and then go and ask him to support you and all your families (inside and outside the kitchen, as they say) when you have nothing to put on your tables …

    good luck and cheerio!

  4. “…..the United Nations is now not going to engage future or new Fijian troops for new operations,” he said.

What this means is that they will continue to use Fijian troops for the Sinai and for any ongoing PK mission they are engaged in. They just won’t consider them for any NEW missions. Nothing changes, the UN still hires bully boys in green.

  5. The move to end 27 years of Fiji’s UN peacekeeping missions should send a message to every man, woman and child in Fiji.

The message is this: Fiji, under Frank Bainimarama’s tin-pot dictatorship will pay heavily for turning its back on the civilized world.

It’s easy for Australia and New Zealand to put their proposal to the United Nations to give Fiji peacekeepers because both countries are vibrant democracies. In the eyes of the UN, democracy beats dictatorship any day!

For us, the people of Fiji, the thing to remember is that Frank
Bainimarama is not going to feel any financial pain when Fiji’s peacekeeping role comes to an end. Why would he? He’s effortlessly (and happily) lining his pockets with serious money.

No, it’s his poorly-paid troops and their dependant families who will bear the real cost of Fiji’s suspension from peacekeeping.

So, if you’re a member of the RFMF, say goodbye to the extra money to buy or build a house. Say goodbye to the money that will ensure the kids get a decent education. And say goodbye to a career in the RFMF that can give you a sense of dignity and pride.

But don’t take it lying down. Stand up and help make it possible for us to say goodbye to a cruel and selfish dictatorship and hello to a prosperous and democratic Fiji.
